Basic Skills Tests
Basic skills tests measure skills that could reasonably be expected for all job applicants. They are typically skills which most people would obtain through elementary school, high school, and everyday life. Included in basic skills are reading, arithmetic, measurement, inspection, process monitoring, problem solving, and checking accuracy.
Basic skills tests are important for learning and performing entry level or lower level jobs in manufacturing, processsing, or operating contexts. They are usually validated using content validation where the skills on the test are necessary to learn or perform the activities of the job.
For example, a basic skills test battery of reading and arithmetic might be used for associates at an automotive assembly plant where the associates have to read Standard Operating Procedures, Safe Job Procedures, and Equipment Manuals. They might also have to learn the fundamentals of Statistical Process Control which would require basic arithmetic skills.
